If you feel unwell, have a cold, or just feel very tired, then it is best you take a day off from diving and snorkeling.
Avoid diving if you have:
- Cold, flu, or sinus congestion → can block your ears/sinuses and lead to barotrauma (painful or serious injury)
- Fever or infection → your body is already stressed
- Chest congestion or breathing issues → increases risk underwater
- Stomach illness (vomiting/diarrhea) → dehydration + risk of panic
- Severe fatigue or weakness → affects judgment and safety
- You need to equalize pressure in your ears and sinuses—being blocked makes this difficult or impossible
- Diving requires clear thinking and energy
- Illness can increase risk of decompression sickness and panic underwater
Be cautious:
- Some meds (like decongestants) can wear off during the dive, causing problems on ascent
